About Math
I like teaching math. I love helping kids who have struggled in the past and think that “they’re bad at math". 4th grade is a year of firsts in math education. Students will begin the year deepening concepts that they’ve already covered in previous grades. Within 2 months, we’ll move to double-digit multiplication. After that, we’ll begin teaching long division, and then fractions and operations with fractions. This is a lot to learn for most students, and we see a lot of frustration as students encounter these new concepts. I have noticed that students who are proficient at their 0-12 multiplication facts tend to do well at grasping the new concepts, while students who depend on multiplication charts and diagrams are seriously hobbled. I honestly feel sad when I see a student struggling with basic multiplication facts when other students are moving on to more challenging concepts. The 4th grade team is making a real push to have all 4th graders proficient in 0-12 math facts by the end of October. We will be tracking each student carefully so that we’re all together as we tackle the more challenging math tasks. Watch for updates, and get involved so that your student is on board and ready to go! We use a couple of programs that are fun for kids, track milestones and data, and make it simple for kids to learn their facts.
